In the early fall of 2004, I
was invited, along with a dozen or so other Houston artists, to
participate in an art show at Club Meteor--which is located in the
Montrose area near Midtown, Houston. Lyle Ruybalid (www.lyledidthis.com)
and the manager of Meteor (
www.meteorhouston.com) organized an art
show for Meteor's patrons.
Starting in the early afternoon and lasting well
into the night, the evening began relatively well; the crowd was good
and they showed some interest in most of the work being shown. And being
that artists love praise, I enjoyed the acknowledgement of my work and
appreciated the well wishes of support. But, the word "sold" on a little
red round sticker placed on a piece of work is a much bigger expression
of one's appreciation; and sadly, by late evening, there weren't any
stickers. :-( |

But then, the "Iron Cross
II[c]" was my salvation. Throughout most of last year, I'd been showing
crosses made of railroad spikes--an idea I came up with in November,
2003. It had gone over well in prior shows but on this night, up to this
point--no takers.
That was until Kristian saw
it....and had to have it! A friend of mine called me from across the
room, Armando Rene (www.starvart.com),
saying this guy wants to buy your cross. I was ecstatic! But then, about
30 seconds later, John and Thomas were digging it as well--they had to
have it too!! Hmmm, a quandary? Only one cross and two buyers. [I am
standing there thinking to myself, "why didn't you bring TWO crosses,
:-)????]
Well, first come first
serve, so Kristian got the cross but through their disappointment, I
segued Thomas and John into viewing my portfolio for other ideas and
opportunities--and that is where the floodgates opened! Ideas were
spilling onto the floor but the question of whether it would all go well
together into the scheme of their home arose. Who do you call? (not
Ghostbusters, to the children of the 80's). They called their interior
designer, Corbin Young (www.youngandjacobs.com),
to come to the rescue; he came to the club for a portfolio review and
consultation.
The result: a custom patio table with a network of
streaming vines below the table surface and 4 hand-made chairs; and a
custom basin stand with a natural metal finish with a 1-1/4" cherry
base-board for their entry restroom. Pictured above are the "Iron Cross
II[c]"; custom basin stand; patio table and chairs set; custom basin
stand. It wasn't a typical meeting--but I will gladly take it!
Thanks for viewing my update.
Have a great week.
